A minimum of five (5) working days.
Temporary Visitor’s Visa
・US passport holders are not required to obtain a visa for the above-mentioned purposes for a stay of up to 90 days in Japan.
・CNMI residents holding the following country’s passport are required to obtain a visa: Philippines, China, Russia, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, India, Indonesia, etc. For other countries and regions, please click here to see if a visa is required to enter Japan.
・Nationals of India, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, China and Pacific Islands (Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau, etc.) may be able to apply for a multiple-entry visa. Please contact our office for further information.

Transit Visa
Activities are limited to sightseeing, leisure and rest. Transit visa is not required if you are staying at the airport and are not going through immigration.
(EXCEPTION: If you are traveling on buddy pass, transit visa is required.)
・US passport holders are not required to obtain a visa to enter Japan for the purpose of transiting in Japan.
・CNMI residents holding the following country’s passport are required to obtain a visa: Philippines, China, Russia, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, India, Indonesia, etc. For other countries and regions, please click here to see if a visa is required to enter Japan.

Work Visa or Long Term Stay Visa
・To apply for Work visa or Long Term Visa, applicant is required to obtain “Certificate of Eligibility”(COE) from Immigration Bureau of Japan. Please click here or call Immigration Information Center at +81-3-5796-7112 for further information on how to apply for the COE.

Q1. I have a US permanent resident card. Do I need a visa to enter Japan?
A1. It depends on your nationality, if you hold a passport of a country with a visa waiver agreement with Japan, you are not required to obtain a visa for a short-term stay. Please click here to check if your country has a visa waiver agreement with Japan.
Q2. How long will it take to obtain a visa?
A2. It normally takes five working days to process a visa application. (e.g. If a visa application is accepted on Monday, it will be processed and ready by the following Monday.) However, it may take longer if the submission of additional documents, further confirmation, or an interview is required.
Q3. When should I apply for a visa?
A3. Most visas are valid for three months, which means you must enter Japan within three months from the date of visa issued. Therefore, you can apply for a visa three months prior to the date you plan to enter Japan. The length of stay in Japan is determined depending on intended period of stay.
Q4. Do I need to make an appointment for a visa?
A4. You do not have to make an appointment to apply for a visa. Please visit our office in person during the office hours (8:30am to 12:15pm and 1:15pm to 4:45pm) with your visa application and required documents. For residents of Tinian and Rota, please contact our office at 323-7201/ 7202.
Q5. Do you accept credit card or check payments for a visa?
A5. We accept only CASH payments for visa application fee. Credit cards or check payments are NOT accepted.
Q6. I am planning to go to US mainland via Japan. Do I need to obtain a visa to transit through Japan?
A6. If you are a national who is exempt from obtaining a visa, you do not have to obtain a visa. If you are planning to enter Japan and hold a passport of a country that requires to obtain a visa, you are required to obtain a transit visa. Transit visa is not required if you are staying at the airport and are not going through immigration. However, if you are traveling on buddy pass, transit visa is required.
