Greeting from Consul-General UEDA Susumu

2024/11/22
Hafa Adai!

On November 15, I assumed the position of Consul-General of Japan in Hagatna. It is an honor to take on this role and contribute to fostering further the close and friendly relationship between Japan and Guam.

This is my first time visiting and working in Guam, but I believe it is a well-known tourist destination among Japanese people, me included. While the number of visitors drastically decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism is currently on the path to recovery, and Guam has once again started to gain attention in various Japanese media outlets.

One of the key responsibilities of the Consulate-General of Japan is to promote the interests of Japanese nationals residing in or traveling to Guam. We are committed to ensuring the safety of Japanese residents and travelers while actively supporting the Japanese community and Japanese companies and strengthening cooperative relationships with them.

Although Japan and Guam share a history of difficult experiences, the two have built a strong and positive relationship in the post-war era. This achievement is a result of the tireless efforts by numerous individuals involved in fostering the relationship between Japan and Guam. Additionally, Guam serves as a vital strategic hub for the security partnership between Japan, the United States, and other countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

To further deepen the strong ties between Japan and Guam, I look forward to working in building further the cooperative relationships with the local government and legislative members, as well as members of the local community in Guam. Following in the footsteps of my predecessors, I consider it my important mission to reflect on past events and remain attuned to the sentiments of the people of Guam.

If you have any opinions or suggestions regarding our consulate, please do not hesitate to share them with us. Your support and cooperation would be greatly appreciated.
